April 17, 2011 - First Day of Riding in TX "Hill Country"

We took several back roads out of Kerrville today to our first stop...Luckenbach, TX, home of Willie's 4th of July picnic and a place made famous by Waylon and Willie's "Luckenbach" song back in the 80's.  Bill and I have been there several times over the past 20 years and not much has changed...a post office, gift shop, dance hall, stage, and "pickers."

Lunch was at Alamo Springs Cafe in Fredericksburg.  They have the best veggie sandwich in the world, in my opinion, but are better known for their giant hamburger, ranked #3 in Texas Monthly's list of the 50 Best Burgers in TX.

Next stop on the agenda - Bandera, the "Cowboy Capitol of the World."  What a wonderful, down-home type of place, with boots hanging from the front of the local 11th Street Cowboy Bar to horses tied up across the street!  We took in a jam session in the Silver Dollar, did some shopping and watched some of the locals ride their horses through town.  I got the feeling we had actually gone back in time!

Then it was back to the RV Park in Kerrville, on the banks of the beautiful Guadalupe River.

Thus ended the first day of riding in TX "Hill Country," and what beautiful country it is!
